Sundar Pichai was appointed as the CEO of Google in 2015, but his journey at Google started much earlier. Pichai, who was born in Chennai, India, completed his undergraduate degree in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He then went on to earn a scholarship to Stanford University, where he pursued a Master's degree in Materials Science and Engineering. Later, he earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a Master's degree in Computer Science from Stanford University.
Pichai began his career at Applied Materials, a semiconductor manufacturing company, before joining McKinsey & Company as a management consultant. He later joined Google in 2004 as a product manager, where he worked on various products such as Google Toolbar, Google Chrome, and Google Drive.
In 2011, Pichai was put in charge of Google's Chrome division and oversaw the development of the Chrome browser, which became one of the most popular web browsers in the world. In 2013, he was also put in charge of Google's Android division, where he helped to integrate Android into a wide range of devices, including smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches.
Pichai's success in leading these important areas of Google's business led to his promotion to the role of Senior Vice President in charge of all of Google's products in 2014. When Google reorganized its business into a holding company called Alphabet in 2015, Pichai was named as the CEO of Google, with co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin stepping back from their day-to-day roles at the company.
